Conquer the year!
Conquer the year!
Setting fitness + health goals with a positive mindset

The new year is a time for fresh starts, new beginnings, and setting ambitious goals. If you're looking to improve your fitness and overall health this year, now is the perfect time to start. But before you dive headfirst into a rigorous workout routine or a restrictive diet, it's crucial to cultivate a positive mindset.

1. Ditch the All-or-Nothing Mentality:

  • The Problem: Many people fall off the wagon quickly because they set unrealistic expectations.

  • The Solution:

    • Focus on progress, not perfection. Celebrate small victories and don't let setbacks derail your journey.

    • Be kind to yourself. Everyone has off days. Acknowledge them, learn from them, and get back on track.

  • The Problem: Anxiousness about what other people think.

  • The Solution: NEVER let another person's thoughts (that they likely won't even say out loud) stop YOU from ACHIEVING YOUR goals. I totally understand feeling anxious or worried about whether people in the gym are watching you. I have been in this same position when I first started working out in the gym. I reminded myself daily that 1. my goal is big and I deserve to achieve it. 2. it takes 14-21 days to create a habit. That is just a couple of weeks of feeling uncomfortable.

These 2 things helped me tremendously + no one even approached me or anything. No one came to tell me I was doing anything wrong (and I did a few things wrong at first). I survived the first couple of weeks of feeling uncomfortable and worried and I am so thankful I stuck with it. You will regret quitting, but you will never regret getting it done.

2. Set SMART Goals:

  • What are SMART goals?

    • Specific: Clearly define your goals. Instead of "get fit," aim for "run a 5k in 3 months."

    • Measurable: Track your progress. Use a fitness tracker, log your workouts, or take progress photos.

    • Achievable: Set realistic goals that challenge you but are attainable.

    • Relevant: Ensure your goals align with your overall health and fitness priorities.

    • Time-bound: Set deadlines for your goals to keep yourself accountable.

3. Find Your "Why":

  • The Power of "Why": Connecting with your deeper motivations will help you stay consistent.

  • Examples:

    • Do you want to improve your energy levels?

    • Reduce stress?

    • Feel more confident?

    • Improve your sleep?

    • Spend more time with your family?

4. Prioritize Sustainable Habits:

  • Focus on long-term change.

    • Instead of drastic diets, focus on incorporating healthy eating habits into your daily routine.

    • Start with small, manageable changes and gradually increase the intensity.

5. Celebrate Your Successes:

  • Acknowledge and reward your achievements.

    • Treat yourself to a massage, buy a new piece of workout gear, or simply enjoy a relaxing evening.

6. Surround Yourself with Support:

  • Find a workout buddy or join a fitness class.

  • Share your goals with friends and family. (this one is tricky, if you KNOW a friend or family member will be negative or unsupportive, don't share your goals with them. Only share with people you know will support you and cheer you on).

  • Seek guidance from a qualified personal trainer or nutritionist.

7. Practice Self-Compassion:

  • Be patient with yourself.

  • Don't give up on your goals if you encounter setbacks.

  • Remember that progress takes time.

I know this one is easier said than done. I am harder on myself than I am on others, but seriously, give yourself grace. Everyone in that gym had to start somewhere. We all have experienced plateaus, frustration, not getting the results we want in the time we want them. We have all been there, we all had to start. It takes time and dedication and most of the people with the figure that might be similar to your goal, have likely worked for a year or more with strict meal plans and a strict routine to achieve where they are right now. Just DON'T give up. Be kind to yourself. Celebrate your victories big or small.

Remember: This journey is about more than just physical fitness. It's about cultivating a healthier lifestyle that supports your overall well-being. Focus on building positive habits, prioritizing self-care, and enjoying the process.

I hope this post inspires you to embark on a successful and fulfilling fitness journey in the new year!
